River Patrol

Each month, UCR conducts river patrols to perform water quality tests and conduct investigations and site visits of on-going projects located along the Chattahoochee River. Using a jet-drive john boat with a Honda 4-stroke engine, UCR maintains a regular presence on the river. Patrols typically involve visual surveys of the river for suspicious spills, smells, garbage and fish kills; we also collect water quality trend data at discharge points.

UCR is the only organization—government or nonprofit—that regularly patrols the industrial and remote portions of the Chattahoochee River between Buford Dam and West Point Lake. As a result, we have found and reported broken sewer lines, dumping, and erosion problems that would have otherwise gone unchecked. Our river patrols are conducted several times a month, more often if there has been a significant storm event or a problem reported to our Hotline.
